Mintage 150,000. I imagine more than 200 survived in VF or better. But I would def. keep the old one as well.
I highly doubt it. They were used and circulated hard. Pcgs estimates total survival 200 plus how many were melted in the early 1850s when bullion value exceeded face. Pcgs has a population including re submissions of 19 above xf 40 and 6 above 50. A very underrated coin much rarer than the 1844
There have to be a lot of collectors with holes in their albums if there are only 200 of these babies. Seems very inexpensive. Read a few online articles and that number seems right. And they think this coin is undervalued. At least 16 different listings on EBay currently. I haven't checked them all to see if they are real/ cleaned/ etc.
As bill says, the estimated survival of 200 for the '43-O Dime come from PCGS. They also estimate the 1844 survival at 1000, and the 1846 (another scarce date from the 1840's) at 500 examples. A large hoard of 1844's was dispersed some years ago (by Heritage I believe), accounting for the current availability of this date which was considered a rarity back about 20 years ago. Understandably, these are estimates based, I am assuming, on the number they have encapsulated. Are there other sources of information? As I expand my seated dime collection I have been looking at Gerry Fortin's site which is quite interesting.
I find myself at the same cross roads in my quest to build a set of half dimes 1829-1837 / 1837 -1873. You set the bar at high vf/xf coins. Then you find yourself sliding down to grades lower as either you can't find the date/ mm you need. Next you realize that some of the mintages have gone from the million and hundred tnousands to figures below 10,000! You research to try and discover out of these lower mintages how many have survied. You realize at this point you are going to have to settle for damaged, detailed coins, and that even though you don't want to invest in a coin with an issue you ask yourself this question.... Will I run across another even in this condition? Cross roads...do I pull the trigger and have regrets....or do I pass and have them? I come to understand that I may never complete the series....then I tell myself you're a variety collector not a hole filler....and then comfort my passion to search out the varieties, and die marriages . I have learned to teach myself you enjoy the search as much as the find....and when you do find another piece of the puzzle to enjoy that even more so. We only get a short time to enjoy and possess these treasures, you may as well enjoy the little things as much as the major finds. As I reach my 64 th year....last month I realized even more so to enjoy everything you can, January was a tough month we lost two men in our neighborhood both under 35yrs. One in an auto accident the other from brain cancer. Both outstanding members of our community. Both had their passions in life.....both lives taken way to soon. Enjoy your passion....everyday.
Yeah. 43 o is a lot tougher than people think. The 46 too. The 44 hoard flooded the market and they’re a slow sell. But they’re conditionally rare too. Gerry is a good friend and lives 20 minutes from me at least in the summer as he winters in Florida and we sometimes do shows together
