Thank you all very much for your comments! CappedBustDimes, Mark, the above statement really caught my eye: I was not aware that there was such a thing as Reeded Edge Capped Bust half varieties?? (This is just my ignorance of the series since of course i know that the 5c, 10c, and 25C of the type, all are identified by varieties - it only makes sense that the reeded edge halves would too). Coinfacts does not list any varieties for any of the reeded edge capped bust halves, nor does Heritage in their sale listings for the 1839-O. And you say Marks' (and my specimen) are both JR-1e - R-7? wow! nice! CappedBustDimes, what is the key diagnostic for JR-1e? Thanks you for your help, Regards, Eduard
Use this link for the diagnostics: Jules Reiver's Variety Identification Manual for United States Reeded Halve Dollars 1836-1839 http://images.heritagecoin.com/image...er/page_01.htm This link is on each of the Heritage lot listings for Jules' reeded edge halves that were in his sale. Don't read too much into the rarity ratings for reeded halves. They are obsolete (good if you are a buyer and bad if you are trying to sell) because there are not enough collectors that pursue these by die marriage to demand a premium on the high R #'s. And you can add to that the fact that the R #'s are very inaccurate since very few pursue and report/keep census information.
