1838 was still in the coin shortage and banking wars from that time frame. The Capoed Bust, Reeded edge coins were only around for four years. In 1838 New Orleans became the first branch mint. Only 20 coins were struck with the O mint mark and that was as above the date on the obverse. After 1839 all mint marks were moved the the reverse. Sure wish I had one of those twenty 1838 but mine is only the 1838 from Philadelphia. Just over 3.5 million were minted. Here’s one of them from my collection.
