1837 $5 Classic head gold

    Thanks. The $3 intimidates me because the vast amount of counterfeits that exist. Early in my numismatic element, I was duped by one for a hefty chunk of change. Never quite got over that. Actually, the lesson learned from that coin is what brought me to cointalk, so I am very grateful for that.

    Regarding cutting a hole in the album, I really considered that one as well, but came to the same conclusion you did. I also like having the ability to keep them in their slabs. Since they are velcroed, I can remove them and view the reverse.

    I would say VF-35 as well. Not too shabby, and you have to give some allowances for gold's propensity for scratching. I think ANACS got that one right.

    I don't think it has been dipped, otherwise there would not be so much gunk around the devices and legends. The coin has been very harshly cleaned.
