The die stages of 1831 N-12. Normally listed as N-12, 12/1, 12/2, and 12/3 there are actually two more stages.

N-12 R-1 this is the typically seen stage with the die crack through all the stars and a retained cud forming to the right of the date. sold for $368

N-12 you might call this 12/.5 There is actually a cud to the right of the date and it only touches point 2 of star 13. This is R-7+ as a die stage, at the time of the Dan Holmes sale there were only two coins known from this die stage. sold for $311

N-12/1 the common N-12 with cud. The cud now swallows points 1 and 2 of star 13. R-2 as a die stage. sold for $506

N-12/2 The three point cud. it now encompasses points 1, 2, an 3 of star 13 R-6 as a die stage. sold for $5,060

N-12/3 The "Harpooned Whale". The cud now extends to star 12 swallowing point and part of point 2. Point 4 of star 13 forms the "harpoon" R-5 as a die stage. sold for $3,450

N-12/3 Terminal stage. The cud now consumes all of star 12 point 2. R-4 as a die stage. Sold for $891, the low price because the rev has multiple heavy scratches through CENT.
