I have an 1827 Square Base 2 Capped Bust Half Dollar with the edge lettering spaced in such a way that the R in OR is overlapping the H in HALF. It appears to say "OHALF" I haven't found any example of this in pictures or in books so I am turning to the rest of the Numismatic comunity for info. Has anyone heard of, seen or have one of this variety half?
It's not too unusual. The lettering was on two straight edge dies and the blank was rolled between them impressing the inscription on the edge and upsetting the rim at the same time. If the dies were not retracted completely to their starting point, of if the coin slipped during the rolling, the lettering of the two dies could overlap.
pictures I'll post them tonight when I get home. Does over lapping edge lettering increase the value?
Hello I think it is damaged on the cheek and wouldn't get a grade. But that is not the same as saying that it is valueless. It is far from a coin without value. Many of these are damaged. Amanda
It would not get a numerical grade due to the damage on the obverse. But if it were sent to a TPG, you could expect to get it back "fine details".
I have several in this condition, minus the cheek scratches. I would say these would grade out a low VF. There's still enough detail to warrant the grade, but it will be a details coin.
What Condor said. The variations are endless. The only ones that are valuable, as far as edge variations are those with double lettering (see below). I have only seen one, and I managed to cherry pick it (natch). Varieties per Overton: All edge lettering Doubled- RARE All edge letting tripled-- very rare Entirely plain edge, extremely rare Flip over all lettering doubled-- extremely rare. He does not assign values.
