1821 quarter strike through?

    is this damage or a strike through?

    thoughts on grade?

    more inclined to say PMD because if you look at the reverse and observe it looks like damage on both sides in the same general area

    so take a look here o the T and Y - it looks like it tried to strike it in the cut...weird...

    If it's a strikethrough you should see the image of the reverse on the obverse and vice versa.

    It's a scratch/gouge. Notice that the metal around the scratch has been "Pushed Up". This is most noticeable above the T and in the fold just above the headband. That will not happen on a strike through

    I agree that it’s probably a scratch/damage. As for grade, I think it would grade VF details, scratched. The TPGs give more leniency for this series than other series, but I think this one is a bit too far over that line to receive a straight grade.

    The variety appears to be B-4, R.3.

    That would be a die clashing of both dies. A strikethough is when a foreign object comes between the die and the planchet when the strike is occurring, leaving an impression of the foreign object on the coin.

    It's a scratch.

    I would think F15 but the grading services are less picky that I am it might go VF details, cleaned and damaged.

    A nasty scratch; I agree with @NSP about the likelihood of a Details slab.
