Just an update. The coins went into quality control at NGC yesterday and if NGC is on the ball the grades (or lack thereof) should be posted today or tomorrow.
I spoke about 20 mins too soon. Here is the grade along with the rest of the pieces that went with it. At least NGC thinks it's real.
Well, my chin is hanging down about to my knees right now. I am amazed. What's worse, I am somewhat concerned.
If you are interested Doug I trust you enough to send it to you and let you examine it once I get it back.
Appreciate the thought Matt, but really no need. I could accept everything about the coin except for one thing - the misformed letters in the legends. Those are there, and I don't need to have it in hand to see that they are there. Those misformed letters, combined with the other things are what convinced me the coin was fake. I have never, ever, seen another one with O's, and I think it was the F if memory serves, like that coin has. It just wouldn't happen. Let me give you an example. This is a French coin, but notice the extra F. Now I have an excellent selection books on French coinage, and this coin (variety) is not in any of them. Even the guys at cgb had never seen this before. But I finally managed to find another one in an auction catalog. I guess the point I am making is that even with obscure varieties there is always another example out there to back up authenticity. And with your coin, there isn't.
Matt, It is about what I thought. It is an interesting coin though and is one of those that provides a perfect lesson in various coin surface problems. Whether your going to sell it or not, thanks for sharing your comments, coin photos and grading experience with us. I know I've got this thread noted as good lesson learned !!:thumb:
