1817 Trade Dollar at auction with 7 bids

    While we can joke about the 1817 Trade Dollar, all kidding aside, I have seen worse counterfeits. The 2nd "1" on the date is not very well done. Crude in fact. I think it is possible this coin originated from a counterfeit master hub that contained only three digits of the date. This hub was then used to produce several counterfeit dies where the third digit of the date was engraved into it. Allowing for counterfeits to be produced for many different dates.

    The eagle's head on that "17-cc" above looks a lot more like a Chinese dragon than our national emblem.
