Calling (Early) Quarter collectors, or anybody who may know : I am having a bit of trouble with the variety attribution of this 1806 quarter. The coin shows unfortunate damage on the obverse, but I've got it down to either a Browning-5 or a Browning-6, both quite scarce, specially the B-6 with 50-60 examples estimated (per the new 5th. Edition of the Mega Red Book). Thanks for any help.
I would like to ask a mod to please move this thread over the US Coin Forum. @lordmarcovan, @ToughCOINS Thanks!
This quarter is 1806 B-6, which is an R5 die marriage according to the Rea et al bust quarter book (this is in line with the Mega Red Book estimate). B-5 and B-6 share the same reverse die, and the main differences are the position of star 1 (lower left star) relative to the bust and the spacing of the R and T in LIBERTY. 1806 B-6 develops a cud at ST(ATES), and if you look closely at your coin, you can see the beginnings of the cud.
Thank you very much, @NSP ! I really appreciate your help. I bought this coin unattributed some time ago. The obverse damage is a pity, but I paid very little for it.
