1804 Nickel exists?

Hi! I've come across what appears to be an 1804 nickel based on the "V" and the distinguished Liberty with left profile but from research it looks like the Liberty nickel didn't start till 1883.

Unless it's a 'funny' 9, can anyone chime in to what this might be if unique - or fake - at all?

    Thanks.

1904 with environmental damage. Probably found with a metal detector.

Damage or altered but it is a bit cool.

    That's for the replies.

But is that how the "9" was stamped back then? I may be naive but it certainly looks like an 8 even with PMD. Is there a coin historian/ museum I can contact?

The coin you posted is a 1904-dated Liberty 5 Cents, not 1804

Note the shape of the 8 in this image. Your coin is a 1904. untitled1883.png

I think there's a curved chunk on the back of the nine that makes it look like an eight. Here's a 1904 with a clear date :

Awesome! Thanks for sharing the actual 1904 coin! It really clears it up - I got a 'smooshed' one. LOL Too bad, I was really hoping for some dumb luck. ;p
