1802 Large Cent

    Here is another pick-up I did on the spur of the moment because the price was right and it held my interest. Can you see what is interesting to me.

    The obverse is centered but something funky is going on with the reverse; there is empty space at the bottom. Also I like the cud above "states".

    Is it the cud by "States?" It looks like that cud is on S-232. Cool coin!

    it has a perfect circle cut on the reverse but not on the obverse. I find that most intriguing.

    Part of what is going on is a photo taken at an angle so the edge is blended into the coin.

    But the Die State is what interested me. I've checked about everywhere I can think of and can't find another example closer to the terminal die state than this one. Some come close, but none appear to have begun filling in past the the upright of the E as this one is starting to do over the S and working back toward the E and the original CUD. At worst it is a late die State VII and possibly deserves a new Die State VIII.

    That is the correct variety.
