I don't see anything that would make me think fake. Looks like it was dug up somewhere wet.

Tentatively genuine. I'm seeing some markers that can either be attributed to casting or heavy corrosion, but it sure has the look of a S-189

I'm hoping it's real and I can purchase it. It's going to PCGS asap for regular service. Just thought if anyone gave me a definitive "No," then I wouldn't have to bother submitting it. I have it, but haven't paid a dime for it... yet.

That would be a decent size gamble if you take it unless the owner is willing to wait for the results of submission. You don't get very may opportunities to get a 1799 though, one of the great underrated coins IMO.

The owner is waiting for the results. No money is involved at this point, save for the submission fee.

I agree with @Kirkuleez: either cast or real but corroded.

I will keep everyone posted. It should take a couple weeks at PCGS.

Looks like a details, though authentic, 1799 IMO.

Thanks. Clearly it is corroded, cleaned, damaged and beat all to heck. I could care less about the problems with a coin this rare. I just hope it's real and the owner gives me a good price on it if it is, in fact, genuine.

I would consider it VG to F details if genuine, but I'm torn on its value. I think I'd feel pretty comfortable in the 3,500 to 4K range.

Congratulations! I like it when modern coins look ancient. :)

Nice! I've been following this thread with baited breath. I'm no expert on early copper, but my guess was that most counterfeiters would not have gone to all that effort to make something that was so damaged. So I was leaning towards genuine.

What did you pay for it?

A lot. I won't make a lot of money, but I was proud to make this one the first I've ever owned.

Mine has considerably more wear than that one. The grading service I sent mine to couldn't certify it saying too much wear. I showed it to Walter Breen before I bought it and he gave it the thumbs up enthusiastically for whatever that meant back then.
A tentative "genuine" from here for that one too!
