Anyone interested in trying to obtain one at auction on Hibid, there's a 1799 Large Cent (according to the auction listing, ANACS had graded it as VF20 details, but owner sought PCI regrade - they graded it as a F-12). Yeh, I know ... PCI not a reputable TPG. Auction closes on Sunday, Jan 30. Link to Hibid auction page -- seller is Central Florida Coin Auctions -- see Lot 113. https://centralfloridacoinauctions....ns--rare-finds--classic-gold/?cpage=2&ipp=100

I have no financial affiliation or interest in the auction or listing, other than I'd love to bid on it but I'm tapped out for now.

I love how they put on their insert "ex-Anacs VF20 details" to lend some aura of respectability, just too darn funny.

Bad photos, expensive coins, and bottom-tier TPG do not go together well.

I see a bunch of NNC slabs in that auction too. They're below the basement.

Oh yeh, they are and whoever the heck NNC is overinflates the grade big time. Most bidders (not all, unfortunately) are aware of the absurdly high NNC grades. Sometimes, there's a semi-decent coin in the NNC holder that would be a great album coin (e.g., some of their harder-to-get Walking Liberty halves) for the right price. Lately, though, some newbies have been going ape-chit on bids for most of those.

It'll be interesting to see how the bidding goes for the 1799 Large Cent (tell me you wouldn't like to have that coin if you're a Large Cent collector). Damn scarce, and the coin, despite the crappy photos, looks to be in decent shape and would look nice in a Dansco album collection of Large Cents.

Grey sheet price for an F-12 is $12,500 (I'm not saying it is an F-12 but it definitely has Fine details).

fyi - an AG-3 1799 Large Cent is $2,800 Grey Sheet. A VF-20 would be $23,000 Grey Sheet.

The 1799 large cent is a coin you never buy raw unless you are an expert who can examine it in person. Certification is mandatory for most collectors for that coin.

If this coin was in an ANACS holder, it should have stayed there. These pieces, even with problems, are bringing 5 figure bids in the big auctions.

Interesting YouTube video on a crossover (to PCGS holder) challenge involving some coins graded by NGC, ANACS, ICG, SEGS, and PCI. Not enough of a sample group to draw any general conclusions, but interesting nevertheless.
