Thats just mind boggling. From the looks of it it seems that it was lost relatively eaarly in its life, in the ground for nearly 200 years.

Just great. Should I ask where it was found?

It was found in our backyard in Erwin, NC, which is actually a horse pasture now. Our understanding is that this used to be an old plantation. Then some farmers came and it was a cotton field for years. Then the farmers sold it off in lots and we are on 3 of them. We have only been here 10 years.

I took the coin to a coin dealer today. He was very impressed on the detail still on the coin. He said that it is a VF if not close to a XF. He told me to but it olive oil it might clear it up some more instead of sending it to NCS. It olive oil ok. He told me what ever I do do not clean it or scrub it. What do you think.

    NO!!!!!!
    DO NOT think about it!
He is telling you it is a VF to XF so he can buy it from you for VF price then sell it for AU price, send it to NCS they are pros in a lab. You are a guy in your kitchen trying to pour olive oil on a 500 coin. NCS=$500 You=$90
Let NCS work there magic. Keep the olive oil for food. ;)

I really wouldn't do the OO deal, even though I doubt that it would hurt the coin. NCS is a much safter bet, and then you would also get a better idea on the grade. To tell you the truth....I don't see this even close to an AU.

I don't collect large copper coins so I could be off on the grade, but I would suggest NCS.

I would strongly recommend that you do not use olive oil on that coin. Olive oil is an acid, mild to be sure but still an acid. And then you would need to use something to clean the olive oil off the coin. It's just one problem after another once you start.

Were I you, I would send the coin to NCS and let them conserve it for you. Too much to risk to try it yourself.

+3 -- send it to NCS.

Coming from a copper collector: DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CLEAN OR CONSERVE IT YOURSELF.

I think when you get it back it will be worth around $200 give or take a little, and the coin needs to be conserved otherwise it will continue to deteriorate.

Ditto... this coin doesn't have normal circulation wear and who knows what kind of detail is hiding underneath all that grime.

Take it from someone who also metal detects and digs a fair amount of old copper coinage, this coin is best left to the pros.

    Hello again Rev Rick,
If the copper enthusiasts at CoinTalk believe your coin to be worth $250 then please consider my recommendation above & send it to NCS valued at $250. It is easy to submit to NCS and it will only cost you a few percent of the $250 as their fee is based upon the coin's value. Here is the link for NCS http://www.ncscoin.com/
    Very best regards,
