Typical gun metal grey. Most likely cleaned years ago, but almost all were and they almost always gets slabbed. Should be VG8 according to books, but might get a 10.
I see no problems that would keep it from grading, and I agree with the VG grade. Honestly, I think it has a shot at F-12, but I like it better at a strong VG.
Wow. I have a few that I've cast aside that look very similar. Perhaps I need to re-evaluate them if they can actually be slabbed.
I meant a few worn large cents, a couple of plugged half dollars of old and the like. I didn't mean that particular coin or that particular date. Apologies.
What is a plugged half dollar? Do you mean a normal half dollar which had a hole drilled in it and then was plugged? That is a damaged coin. The 1795 Silver Plug Dollar is a very unique mint product. The silver plug was inserted into the planchet by the mint to ensure that the silver content was correct. You can read about them here: http://urc.universityrarecoins.com/urccontent/wbd/M105_1795-Silver-Plug-Dollar.pdf The silver plugged dollar in the OP is *not* the same thing as a damaged and plugged coin.
That's a big hole right in the center. Someone shot a bullet through it? VG or even F details. Genuine, plugged/repaired. I don't see how this straight grades, but I have been wrong almost every time.
Take a look at the link in my post #7 above. This is a genuine mint product. The plug in the center is what makes this coin special.
OK ty now I see it. Still at VG/F. The reverse is better but these old rare silver coins get a little leeway on the grade. F would not surprise me.
