I think the coin was undervalued by the auction house as well.

    Not rare. lol.

The US was born in 1776 and US coinage was first minted in 1793. That's like yesterday in Europe but these "dealers" you are talking to are trying to scam you.

Yeah, I just bought a 1797 two pence for eighty bucks but any real US coin from the 1700's will demand a premium here.

Hi- just wanted to say I have also contacted a reputable US early copper dealer who suggested that due to the fact that it seems to have been slightly cleaned on one side it would be better to sell it on eBay- and if the UK dealer thinks they can secure £1200 at auction then go for it.

If you list it on eBay for a 10 day auction, you'll see how fast you'll fly by the 1,200 pound estimate they gave you. Just take good pictures, you'll make a killing!

Wish I could list this coin, talk about some serious attention!

If you are going to sell it I would advise you to send it to PCGS or another TPG and get it graded. That coin would get a higher bid price if it was graded.

Great find!!! Wow and wow! I would definitely get it slabbed!!! You will get more money and the buyer will have assurance that it is indeed real:)

Please please invest in getting the coin graded by either PCGS or NGC, the fact that it comes back with a details only grade will make no difference in a coin from America's youth.

This is a S-44 Die state IV. One of the two AU50 coins which top this list was found in England.

My recommendation is to hold off for the Long Beach Auction which regularly brings out the big boys with deep pockets for premium Copper.

This is the Heritage Auction Site. Mark Borchardt does the write ups on the coins and knows his stuff. His initials are the same as mine (MRB), so I remember it easily. Note the EAC grade is much tougher than the TPGs, but I still think your coins is a Condition Census coin.

The only 94 head of 93s are obverses 1, 2, 3 with a fish hook curl and high relief. The only 94 Reverse of 95 is Obv. 39 (though Obverse 38 is called ALMOST a head of 95).

    This, like most 94s is a head of 94. Sheldon's 44 (19S) and Breen's 33 (17U).

I can't judge either way about the coin you have. But shouldn't it be appropriate to start your own separate thread on the subject rather than piggy back on this one? Just some food for thought for the future new subjects you decide to create, it's a little courtesy and respect for the original poster to get the information he/she needs.

The seated specialists will chime in shortly.

No problem at all. At the top of the page near the "Cointalk" banner, there is a forum button. Click on that, chose a sub-forum (ie:General Discussion, Coin Roll Hunting, etc.) whatever is an appropriate venue for your topic, and click on the secondary button entitled "+Post New Thread". There you go, easy peasy!

I'm guessing the OP will never come back and we'll never really know. Maybe they sold it to the auction house for the 1200 pounds...

The best piece of advice you have received is to have it graded. That would add MUCH to its worth.
