After ruling out the easy S-5 (large letters and date obverse), I look at these keys first : OBVERSE : the laurel sprig under the bust quickly narrows down the obverse dieREVERSE : the trefoils (number and location) and nature of the bow help me pin down the reverse die. In this case, this obverse is the "Sprig with a Twig"... the three leaves have a little left-pointing branch. That, coupled with the "kidney bean" bow, immediately gives S-9. That's my thinking in the hustle and bustle of the convention floor; quickie "field attribution" can be quite useful.
