OK, I'm looking through the threads and as a British collector who does British coins, I'm supposing this hasn't already been asked. I hope I'm not too much of a voice crying in the wilderness here. Six weeks back I bought a 1787 shilling. This is one of the "No Hearts" type, but within that type it's the variety listed a Scarce in ESC, with no stops either side of the date. ESC has a footnote to this piece which says that the final 7 of the date may possibly be over a 6, and it was while I was squinting at it through my loupe that I got distracted by the 8. In a nutshell, it looks like it's over a 3. I can see a sort of spur hanging off the bottom of the 8, like the tail of a 3 but with a sharp serif, and much of the right hand side of the 8 has a "shadow". I cannot see that it could be anything other than a 3. Can anyone shed any light on this? Is it an unlisted variety?? Thanks Mule.
