I really don’t know if it’s damage or not there is a nick on the rim and I can see the copper underneath? I’m really unsure
It almost looks as if something is on it because there’s marks on it in small places and you can see the copper underneath? I’ll atleast get it slabbed first the genuine but I honestly would like to know the true grade form an expert but don’t know if it’s worth it if it’ll come back with damages or environmental you know? But maybe these older coins in this decent of grade it won’t affect it much? I’m going to have to look more into the coin later tonight when I have more time to find out which variety it is
well even if it comes back details i would call it details 25r 40-45f overall 30-35 details.. here... then cut by 1/2 2/3s for details.... so i would say 150ish would be fair price... low price on chart starts at 25...
coins like this in this price range and age get much much better prices slabbed as there are a good number of fakes out for this coin yes details/damage grades lower the value but just the proof it's real gets you most of that back. Honestly most collectors would rather pay the extra then get stuck with a fake.
hehe I say 2=b because of the thickness of the U on US on yours the 1-a appears thinner but is hard from pics hehe\
This is true, if I get it slabbed not graded will they put the variety on it or just authenticated? I’ve only sent coins in to be graded. With the diagram you sent it’s hard for me to differ the 1 a and 2 b. Is there anything you can think of I can look at or upload another picture that may help? They both seem to have everything in the same place and both seem to have 48 leaves
I believe this is the 2B because on the reverse the star at the top is off to the right of the leaf and on the 1A I believe it looks pretty centered, am I mistaken?
Here’s some pictures without much lighting to show how black the coin is, you can see the mark on the nova side that shows the copper underneath.
Yes it has to be the 2B because the star at the top above US is placed same place slightly to the right of the leaf and the 1A is just about centered on one of the leaves
Nope i see what your saying so seems right to me hehe would have to have the book (nova constellatio: Identifying the 1st US coins) and it's back at the library at the moment (planning to take it back out as soon as my nova gets here)
Well I guess the next step is should I list it and see what happens or get it slabbed and hold on to it? I would like to get it graded but also would be happy with just the type it is and or authenticated. I usually make these split decisions last second lol..
The blackness almost reminds me of some sort of varnish or lacquer. You may consider 100% pure acetone as a non-destructive (and non details grade) method at “cleaning” the coin. many Roman coins were lacquered for an artificial Latina. Potentially happened Jeff
I will pick some up tomorrow as long as I can count on it not handing the coin at all. I believe the local mail salon will carry 100% acetone
It's a 2b. I wouldn't bother slabbing, it is one of the most common varieties. I love these coins but they really don't seem to sell for much. I recently bought a much nicer 1A which is a better variety for slightly over $100.
I don't suggest buying your acetone at the nail salon. The nail polish remover they sell does contain acetone but also various additives to make it smell better, reduce evaporation and reduce skin drying. These will leave residues on your coin. Just go to the hardware store (Home Depot, Lowes, Ace, etc.) and buy regular acetone in the can. That is as close as you can get to 100% acetone without paying a fortune for laboratory-grade and the hardware store stuff is perfectly adequate to our coin collecting needs. Just remember to only use the acetone once and dispose of by dumping on concrete and allowing to evaporate.
Well thank you for your honesty! I swear I’ve seen these go for 400-700 in worse condition but most likely a more rare variety! I’ll go ahead and list it this weekend and see what the people do with it. Much appreciated
