1776 FM Mexico 8 Reales - Authentic?

    Using a caliper this time instead of a ruler, it's closer to 2.5mm.

    2.5mm is the correct thickness for most of these. Agree with jgenn that it doesn't seal the deal. I'm pretty sure early 1900's bullion copies also had the same thickness.

    Cast, or salt water damage, then cleaned?

    If 2.5mm is the thickness then the SG is 9.1 so you most likely have a counterfeit.

    There was recently a thread on CU about how shipwreck 8 reales seem to be consistently under 10 SG. Don't recall if 9.1 is too low for those or not. Sometimes I hate how complicated these coins can be.

    In 1776 parts of Mexico was a war zone. Oh, by the way, something called the Declaration of Independence was signed. But the real drama - iPen overpaid by a large margin ! LOL.
