I am starting a collection of family birth-year coins, and am not sure how far back I want to go. To date, the oldest birth year I have is my maternal great-great-great grandfather, born in 1794 in Pennsylvania. He fought in the War of 1812. While I haven't yet collected any coins from that year, I do have a list of coins that were minted then. I suspect some of the coins will always be out my reach. But at least I know what they look like. I can go back one more generation to my maternal great-great-great-great grandfather, born in 1761, born in Lancaster, PA. He fought in the Revolutionary War under George Washington. Obviously no U.S. coins were minted back then. The Red Book offers some idea of the coins used back then. I'm just wondering what suggestions this group might have for me, if I decide to delve into Colonial coins from 1761.
Here is an article I found that might help. Spanish Milled "Dollars" for example were very much in use. http://colonialcoins.org/media/pdf/Colonial Coinage Overview.pdf
