    1776 Bolivia 8 Reales

Hello , here's another one, this is a Potosi mint 8 Reales, 1776, there are many counterfeits of these too, any ideas as to this one's authenticity welcome, ( sorry, haven't been able to get it weighed as yet)

Weight will eliminate well over half the fakes, so it is the first step in authentication of any piece that bears a strong resemblance to what a genuine one looks like.

What should a portrait dollar weigh ideally ?

I'm sorry to say it has the look of a cast copy. Real or fake, the coin has been tooled. It is most noticeable in the motto on the reverse - PLUS ULTRA. But I'm pretty sure that was done by a previous owner, not the maker of the coin.

The correct weight is exactly the same as I posted before.

    Hello
I have purchased my own set of digital jewellers scales measuring to .01 of a gram & the columnario weighs 26.31 grams , a slight improvement on 26.2 Oh well

    Hello
the 1776 Bolivia dollar weighs in at 26.79 grams. The edge pattern has two overlaps at opposing points .

The weight is just a bit light, but not so much that it alone would make me suspect the coin. However, on the coins from Potosi, the leaves on the edge all point the same way with only one joint. So given that, the weight being slightly light, and the overall look of the coin - I would definitely suspect the coin as being a counterfeit.

Could I be wrong, of course. But only an in hand examination, or one by an expert, would convince me I was.

    Hello
The portrait dollars don't have leaves on the edge, it has a chain pattern of rectangles and circles.

You're correct, my mistake in the wording. Nonetheless, what I said about the edge design is correct - all point the same way with only one joint.

    Hello

I have had a response from Ponterio & Associates Inc. re- the authenticity of this coin having supplied high res scans and the weight details.

    Here is Rick Ponterio's response:

    Dear Mr. Fletcher,
The Photos that you emailed me appear to be normal. I have no reason to doubt the authenticity of this coin.

    Thank You,
    Rick Ponterio

    As I said -

"Could I be wrong, of course. But only an in hand examination, or one by an expert, would convince me I was."

Now then, send Rick the coin, not just a picture. Then I'll believe it.
