Since I'm moving to Williamsburg in the summer of 2020, I treated myself to a sweet halfcrown. There were 3 at this grade level on eBay I believe. Two were graded by NGC and listed for thousands of dollars. I was happy and heck to nab this one for $430 shipped. Please share your thoughts on the coin. Hopefully I made a decent purchase. This is kind of a new area for me.

Nice pick up. William and Mary coins like Queen Anne’s are always popular and collectible.

Is it graded or raw? The picture obviously looks raw but it could be before it was slabbed.

Typically going for about 350-400 for an XF and 600-650 for an AU.

    Nice coin!
In case you are interested, that is the First crowned shield Reverse. (Identifiable as the device in the bottom right is 3 fleur de lys - the second type has a quartered lions and fleurs in that sector.) The Crown has frosted caul, but not interior, and pearls. I can't see any over-strike letters which, also occur on this design.

It is raw. Thanks for the pricing info. Are those auction results like from Heritage, etc?

Yes for shield type 1. You need to remember that some US auctions achieve lower prices whereas specialised UK auctions could achieve slightly higher prices. Then factor in buyers premium etc. which you don’t pay at eBay :)

Also the bulk of the US coins are graded which is a safer bet

You should also point out that those are also British grades. Bump everything up a step or so to get the equivalent American grade.

I'd probably call that VF-35 by US standards (might squeak through to EF), which means its a low VF by British standards.

If you check Heritage, VFs of this type sell for in the range of $150 to $300, EFs between $300 to $400, depending on eye appeal and originality. Yours has some surface problems and some striking problems, which are punished more than you'd think in British coins.

In summary, I think you have an overall attractive coin, but you paid a strong price for it.

In this case, availability at this grade level may have influenced the price I paid.
