I am very happy to have collected coins of the 12 Caesars. The title simply means that while my goal was to collect all in silver there is one lonely copper As of Augustus. I started this project in April and could not have gathered the coins I did without the kindness and support of many individuals including members of this forum. I just purchased the final 2, denarii of Titus and Domitian, from Forvm. I am very excited to have put this together. Please see my Forvm gallery for pictures of the 12. http://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/index.php?cat=41352
It sure took you a much shorter period of time than me. Mine was in the making for years upon years. Very nice. Congrats. One note: The Augustus silver should be easy and cheap enough to complete your set in silver. Good luck.
Ditto. Very attractive display. I have very much wanted to assemble such a set, especially after seeing idesofmarch display his phenomenal 12 Caesar aureus set.
@Daniel Jones no more excuses! They won't collect themselves! @Orfew great looking set! I'm only three into the twelve but I haven't committed to only silver. Maybe I should get them in silver and the available ones in bronze!
Orfew, everyone has already expressed my admiration for all you have accomplished. Fantastic job and wonderful examples!!! BTW I'm STILL missing a portrait of JC
I just got the JC Elephant traveling mint 49 BCE when he was crossing the Rubicon... but no portrait yet. HEY Mikey, when YOU get one; go ahead and get two so we can share!
Congrats Orfew! You have reached a very important Roman numismatic milestone. After the Augustus, what's next?
Thanks David, I am not sure what is next. I will wander around a bit and see what strikes me. Who knows, now that I have the year of the four emperors I might just try for the year of the 5 emperors. I have also been thinking about a set of the 5 good Caesars in denarii.
You should build the set anyway you like. There are no right or wrong paths. However, some paths are tougher than others.
Congratulations! You really maintained focus to collect your Caesars so quickly . Over time, I wonder how many will be replaced? Do any of us ever really consider a set "complete"? Echoing Zumbly, which are your favorites? I like your Gaius and Otho best, but there are many very interesting coins in your set.
Thanks for the comments. The Augustus will certainly be replaced. Probably within the next few weeks. Others will also probably be upgraded over the next few years or so but now that I have completed the set I am in no hurry. I would like to get a rare example of a Vespasian denarius and a lifetime portrait of JC. The Galba is fairly rough, so I would not mind an upgrade for him. As for favourites, that is tough. If I had to choose I would say the Gaius, Claudius, JC and Otho are my favourites in that order.
