Hi all, As some of you know, I have a soft spot for she wolves on roman coinage, either republic or imperial. I've started a series of them, but lately, for some reason, had to slow down a bit my avidity for them. I couldn't pass this one, sold by a friend of mine at a reasonable price, so here is the 10th Lupa in my collection S. Pompeius Fostlus, Denarius Rome mint, 137 BC Helmeted head of Roma right, X below chin, jug behind head SEX PO [FOSTLVS] She wolf suckling Remus and Romulus, fig tree in background, the shepherd Faustulus behind. ROMA at exergue 3,73 gr Ref : RCV # 112 var, RSC Pompeia # 1a, Crawford # 235/1c Here's a link to my RR gallery for those who would like to have a look at them : http://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=302 Please feel free to post any she-wolf/lupa you have in your collection Q

That is an outstanding coin. I have been hunting for a she wolf coin myself, but I've yet to find the right one. You did really well there. I am green with envy. Congratulations on adding a solid coin to your collection.
Love the wolf Q and your gallery very awesome, some day i'll have to a AR version of the Wolf!! Mine..
I have an S. Pompeius Fostlus Denarius and they are neat coins. Doug pointed out that there is suppose to be three birds in the tree. Mine shows all three even though the overall coin is not the best. Another avenue to wolf gathering is in the Provincials. These are big guys. Macrinus, Laodicea AE29 Severus Alexander, Antioch AE33 Maximinus I Ninica Claudiopolis AE31 Who wants to show the Maxentius that I don't have? All I have from that period are minor types. on pediment between Dioscuri
This thread is the proverbial problem...just when I think I'm satisfied, I see something else I've got to have.
Yes Doug, I've been considering provincials too, because there are terrific she-wolves on some of them, but, eh ! that's another big job.... That one you mean ? Maxentius, Follis Ostia mint, 1st officina AD 309-312 IMP C MAXENTIVS PF AVG, Laureate head of Maxentius right SAECVLI FELICITAS AVG N, She wolf left, suckling Romulus and Remus, MOSTP at exergue Ref : RIC VI # 52, RCV # 15024, Cohen # 101 (12) Q
I am sure I have a couple of tatty AE3s somewhere but they are not worth digging out. Have to say I am impressed with these RRs. Great coins all.
Love the new addition, Q, and have been looking for one of my own. That Maxentius, though... wow! I'll offer this 2nd century A-Pi As to the thread:
very nice new denarius...i don't have a she-wolf silver or a nice one in AE. that's a sweet RR gallery you got there Q...some fantastic coins. go look if you skipped the link!
