This might be one of the most colorful PCGS graded 1968-S Lincolns that I have ever seen. This was an NGC PF67BN that dropped 2 grade levels when crossing to PCGS (PR65BN).
Todays offerings a NGC MS67RD 1969 obv and rev and a NGC MS67RD 1969D obv and rev. The 1969 example is the first of what I call the slashed eyelid dates. if you look at the strike on the Philly example compared too the Denver example you will see what I mean. For the next several years I have examples like this and most came out of the Philly mint.
They changed the design starting in 1969 making Lincoln look more "cartoonish" (IMHO). Compare this 1960 (a Robec coin) that uses the old design -- with the 1969 (another Robec coin) that uses the updated design. Note the area around Lincoln's mouth, which I think looks odd in the redesign. There is a stately, dignified quality in the old design that is lost in the more modern (1969+) interpretation.
And people thought Abe couldn't get any homelier. Thanks to the mint, those people were proved wrong.
