Okay, first of all, this is NOT my note currently....However, I am contemplating it.... I've three questions for the folks here... 1. What kind of grade does everyone think... Personally, I'm thinking 20 or perhaps a 25+ 2. What would you be willing to pay for a note like this, considering what it is... Finally, would it be worth getting graded? Thanks in advance.
hold it up to the light, when being graded graders seem to be harsh on pin holes. I see a fold so that will also knock it down a peg. Grading? to me that is a very personal choice. But yes MYSELF, I'd have it graded but I'd brace myself on the grade not being what expected. IMPO
These are series 1901 but were printed through the end of large-size series notes (1928), almost 30 years. I bought mine 8 years ago in a CGA holder and then submitted it to PMG. It came back 30EPQ. I paid $800 at the time.
Looks like the note in question is pretty close to @Hommer 's example, gradewise? (12, maybe?) I too know next to nothing about grading paper money, or the subject in general, though it's a handsome design and I like it.
A neat note for sure but I’m not an obsolete note collector, however I do collect CSA notes. I don’t believe that note is a 25 or a 20. I think it’s more of a F-15. The reasons why I feel this way are the note has folds and stains. Not sure if it has pin holes but that was a popular thing to do. They is one very annoying and obvious fold going through the bison and that kills it for me. At the very top is a small tear above the word THE. As for the pluses, I don’t see any pen marks so that’s good. The bill itself is nicely framed and has decent colors. However that is not that unusual on these types of nots. If it was a CSA note and was well centered, that is something to take note off. If I was interested in this bill I would not submit for grading. In fact, I’d find another one in better condition. With paper money, especially this old, condition is everything and this note is missing a lot. Just my opinion.
Whenever you’re contemplating buying an iconic note, have patience and don’t settle for a lower grade, inexpensive note thinking you’ll upgrade it down the road. Buy it once. Buy a note you’re proud to have in your collection and show to other collectors. A poor quality, washed and pressed note you buy now will still be a poor quality, washed and pressed note when you want to sell it. There’s usually a reason that a $400+ note is not in a holder. I don’t see it as a VF note. It’s Fine at best.
With out having the note physically in hand it can be challenging to determining grade, but based on what I see would probably go VF-35.
Yeah, I just don't know either and as I don't have the note in hand it's so tough to say. Granted I could always send it back... and it is from a person I bought from before, though always a graded note versus raw... It certainly doesn't compare to the 30 Steve uploaded.... The hard crease through the center unfortunately always draws my attention which is a shame... I do feel it's an honest note... I will make my final decision tomorrow...
A thing to keep in mind, grading is very subjective, even when using the published guide lines, it’s been my experience that PMG is pretty tough on the details, allot of my stuff is from the old PCGS ( collectors universe) haven’t really seen much from PCGS gold shield would probably get a more favorable grade from them.
