I received a curious e-mail from an auction house. They are willing to pay $100 over the price of the 1 oz. platinum proof coin that will be release on Dec. 3rd.

It's the first time I've received a solicitation like this one. I know it happens, but it's usually dealers who make these offers.

Has anyone else recently received an offer for this upcoming release?

This one is going to be the key. 4000 mintage. But is the demand there? Interest in these appears to be waning.

They're already setting up sales for the ones they buy from folks like you. Riding the bubble for a quick flip.

You may be right, but I would not automatically assume that this is a long term dud. Several of the low mintage years retail for over 2 grand in MS 69.

Oh, not at all. There are Modern issues with good long-term outlooks, and this shapes up to be one of them. These guys don't plan on holding them long enough to test the mid-term, much less the long term.

You're right. I had considered buying one and holding it, but it's more money than I'm comfortable with held up in one coin.

Platinum is listed at (spot) $842/oz. So the goobers are picking my pocket for how much? Frankly, I just can't justify the outlay. Oh the greed. Why such a devil of a premium?

Yeah, I'm also on the "pass" bandwagon. I'm also not incredibly fond of the manufactured scarcity of a lot of these modern issues, especially for anything in the 4 figures.

Supposedly the mint had a heck of a time securing the blanks.

I am saving my pennies for that mysterious 2016 silv.... I mean, gold set.

Platinum seems to be the bastard stepchild in the eagle family. They often see limited demand and low mintage. Even at 4,000, it still wouldn't be the most scarce platinum eagle with most of the uncirculated (burnished) versions ending up with less.

At 4,000 coins, I can see this selling out relatively quick. This is likely a good number to make the coin reasonably limited for the end customers that actually want one.

could also explain the lack of bullion eagles this year...
