Hi all, welcome to my 21,000th post! Today I want to share my latest Mint Error acquisition.. It is a Type 1 (no upraised rim) $1 Eisenhower Blank. It is my second Blank Ike and I was able to acquire it at a excellent price. But I have a good question for everyone. On the NGC label.. I'm curious about the letter S that shows right before $1 What could that mean exactly? To my understanding that would be the symbol for Silver. My problem is that the seller did not state it was silver and the NGC Verify also does not state it. I know there were 40% silver clad Ikes so I'm wondering if this could be one. @JCro57 & @Fred Weinberg
The S typically means Silver. Problem I see is that the 40% silver Ikes weigh 24.59g and your blank weighs 22.4 which is lighter than the clad should weigh by just a bit (i.e. 22.68). Conclusion - labeling mistake
That makes a lot of sense. I didn't even think about what the difference in weight would be. Excellent observation! So Nickel Clad and Silver Clad has a weight difference?
It's labeling mistake. NGC used the S $1 for 'silver dollar' but that blank is clad, as can be seen in the edge photo. It's occurred on other Ike dollars - it doesn't mean it's silver, just 'silver dollar' size.
Excellent! That's what I needed to know.. Thank you guys! Well at least my new Blank Ike is in better condition that my last one!
Concur with labeling error. Message me the next time you find one of these for a great deal! But wait until 2020 to sell it to me, since I’ll be on coin probation until then.
@paddyman98 Not only did I used to own that exact one, but I returned it because it wasn't silver and it is featured in my error book on why it is important to check labels carefully. My first clue was the weight was off
Great! You see I am different from you. I collect error labels. I would never return this slab. I love this Mint Error. Thanks for the post.
I like error labels too Back in the states, I have a 1913 T1 that's improperly labeled as 1913-D. The seller sold it to me at a reasonable price and said he took a loss on that one because he didn't check the coin and trusted the label. I decided to make a new thread so we can share them. https://www.cointalk.com/threads/post-your-slab-errors.335385/
I have some that I keep, and those are in the book as well. Waiting for one more of the three reviewers. so far, all positive. Hoping Whitman will publish it
