This is probably a silly question but, I've come across a $1 dollar bill that has both the letters in it's serial number (the letter before the numbers and the letter after the numbers) matching. Is that normal? Curious because I've been looking at my currency for years now and I've not noticed ever coming across this type of situation before.

    Just thought I'd ask. Thanks.

It happens often enough to not impress me anymore.

I’ve been looking at bills for a long time now and only noticed it now. Like I did with the star notes. Just curious if there is a specific reason or purpose for it to occur.

Yes, there is. After serial number G96000000F, they advance to the next suffix letter alphabetically, which would be G00000001G. The maximum serial number is 96000000 before they advance. So potentially there is 96M $1 notes with block G-G. You can read more about it here, http://www.uspapermoney.info/general/number.html

It happens more often than not so I don't collect them.

I see. If that's the case, it's not even as limited as the star notes.

    Thanks for all the replies.

We need the series (year) and prefix & suffix letters @Mary Washington or a photo. The numbers resemble a birthdate.
