It looks to me like an 1898. It's ugly, quite corroded, and has a small bend in it... It seems to be bronze, but it is also about the thickness of a dime. On my digi scale a regular Indian Cent weighs in at 3.0, so it's off a little, but this weighs in at 1.7. Any ideas? It's been in an acidic environment, allowing metal to be eaten away from the coin.

That was certainly one of my theories. I just didn't think it could away nearly half the weight and still have that much detail left though... I suppose if it ate away the top and bottom evenly though, there still could be distorted details... That would probably account for the strange looking date. Thanks for the reply.

Acids reduce the surface , including the diameter, evenly on metal. So the detail will be there even after large proportion of weight ( metal) lost. Many think it reacts from the top of devices , but it is the whole surface.
