I call them counter-stamped, I really like them. (even if they are numismatically worthless)

Have yet to see any in circulation, I do have 2 of the LP1's though (P&D). My coin store had a ton of them, a couple of boxes.
I'd say open it, you can always reroll it in bank rolls, its really the mint rolls that people want, and those are Brinks rolls.
It looks AU, maybe MS, beautiful toning. I've never seen any kind of toning detract from value.

Cropping it with photoshop doesn't hurt Nicer than handheld. My setup is a milk carton with the bottom cut off. lol
Not my personal coin, but derived from metaldetectingforum.com, there are always a ton of ugly coins found there, but this one takes the cake.
