I think you're more likely to find a fake one in circulation than a real one.
Perhaps. But the 1916-S isn't valued much higher than the Philly issue at 22 million mintage. And in that condition, probably not worth much...

1916-S merc mintage is 10 million - not particularly low.

Even if you paid double spot price in 2005, you're still doing alright on them.
