I would tend to agree with you, that as long as a the damaged coin is attractive and readable, it doesn't matter too much.
Yes, it seems that you were pretty badly scammed.
If it was a RELIEF as opposed to INCUSE edge inscription I would be very keen to keep it. But as it is, it is poor quality and I would like it to die.

1907 is in poor condition-worthless. Kwang-tung dollar looks spurious (the obverse dragon is too crude). Crown is an OK XF. Probably about $2.
