So how would a die gouge happen? By a clash with another die? But that would be a "die clash" and would most likely show an image, right?

The weight is 2.8 g. And I think it a 1980 d. but I really can't tell, it could be 1989.
I found a VF 1910 s Lincoln cent yesterday in a roll. And in the next roll of pennies I found a 1937 mercury dime, it's toned purple. Cool huh!
