Grease filled die or damage. The dates are part of the master die or hub, so they can't just accidentally leave one off.

You can tell someone has machined it down because of the marks. It's damaged.
Contact mark IMO. Probably from the date. I have seen several like this posted on here with various letters and numbers.

Didn't they certify a dropped edge letter a couple of years back? I still say they are all contact marks...

What I meant to say is that on a clash, the clash marks will rise out of the field seemingly behind the details, rather than appear just smashed...
