Yeah, the 1897 centavo isn't worth a fortune but it's easily over your $2 threshold. Even uncirculated examples have that mushy-looking rim.
Another point that says woody (not definitive, but worth noting) is that the lines have the same orientation on both sides of the coin.
Um, wouldn't the lines running over the devices be the best indication that it's not die polish?

These aren't always considered Revolutionary issues; for example Krause lists them in series with the other 1 and 2 centavos of the same design...

Lots of sources give the composition of the Aztec calendar 5 and 10 centavos as copper-nickel, but before now I'd never seen the exact ratio...
