Thick lettering just looks like die deterioration. I like the clash though.
The second picture of the letters is true doubling IMO. Clear split serifs and characteristics of a doubled die.
It looks like it may be the result of an overpolished die. But the pictures of the front are hard to see and slightly blurry.
If I were to guess, it probably sat on top of an item with those letters written on it for a very, very long time. The letters likely transferred...
