As Idhar and Patty said, it's a steel penny plated with zinc. That's why it looks odd.

I went through 8 penny rolls last night. I found over 3 rolls of copper (1959-1981), 4 wheat cents and 1 Canadian Cent from 1932. Pretty cool coin.

Difficult to tell from the holder but it looks like a XF45, maybe AU-50 with a worn die.

Put them in a 2 x 2 holder, mark them copy or counterfeit and keep them as a collectible item. 20 years from now, you'll be glad you did.
The gum was probably grape flavored and stained the coin. I really don't know but I couldn't resist. :D
