The worn letters are from a grease filled die. Otherwise, normal wear and tear on a zinc penny or cent, depending which term one prefers. :)

Go to your local bank and ask the teller if you can see the rolls. Look at the end of machine wrapped coins. I think you will find the same PMD...

I think the original intent was to display the reverse of a copper and steel wheat cent and the reverse of the memorial cent.
