It looks plated and that means the coin has been damaged. At this point it is only worth face value.

You mentioned a hammer several times. That will break the case and it could cause damage to the coin. The plastic may scratch the coin itself....

It could be several things that caused that but I don't think Lincoln had false teeth and that's what it reminds me of.
