I'm thinking the color is because it's zinc under that thin copper coating.

The lighting made it a bit difficult to get a better photo but there is no zinc showing so I was pleased with that. It also has some MD in places...
The reverse has been ground flat then buffed to be smoother. Having no rim is the clue to this type of damage.
