It's the design. Not enough metal on either sides causes it to look weakly struck. I love the series and the look of Liberty but they do look weak.

I've never had any trouble finding one of them, just the '50 at times.

Your coin looks as if it was cleaned and that lowers the value. I would expect the coin you posted to be about $35.00.
There's only one Nickel that's a key and it's the 1950. You can buy one for around $12.00 in great shape.
