Definitely an error
The 9 and the 7 in the date took a hit, the mint mark is a filled D due to a die chip and the ear in not doubled.
It’s already been said, large and small dates.

Yes it is a die chip and yes, it’s in an unusual spot but they can take all different shapes and be anywhere on the coin.
Just zinc that toned from the environment. We have a lot of nasty looking coins from 1982 and newer that rot due to zinc planchets.
Another reason not to buy on the bay.
