This is worth a try, but it's likely that the scale's resolution just isn't high enough. One grain is around 1/15 of a gram, so not much better...
It looks to me like that scale isn't designed to weigh more closely than a tenth of a gram. That's not really good enough for work with coins....
I share your skepticism about digital currency, but I don't find this argument especially compelling. That which can be physically possessed can...
Distilled water first, then let it dry. If there's still visible debris, try acetone. But most of what you see may be toning, and neither water...
Time to take some of that CoinStar change and buy a Red Book... ;)
