Just wanted to add, I am totally willing to deal with people in Canada as well, as long as they're reputable and have nice coins.
Is there, by any chance, a die crack on the reverse joining the letter A and T in STATES?
Got my 5. Now the question is: send them all off unopened for grading; or open them, cherry pick coins for my collection, and send off the...
Sorry, I can't see any trace of a D.
Not only colorful, but amazingly well-struck for a cent of the era. Nice pick up.
You forgot a third option: coin shows. :)
My guess (could be wrong of course) is that it was chemically dipped in an attempt to remove toning. Possibly it was because of those black spots...

Beautiful BTW! People who haven't tried don't appreciate how hard it is to find a truly nice Booker T. Washington or Washington Carver half.
Planchet quality was, indeed, a problem for many early coins, and particularly copper issues. I don't know if this is one of them, but there are...
I don't believe 3d printing is a danger to the hobby any time soon. More likely we'll see sophisticated counterfeiters using laser-cut dies made...
Great questions. Right now, I'm just looking to do a basic date and mint set, 1858-1920. I'm in the US.
