I don't understand how it made it all the way to auction without someone seeing the D.

Plated and or polished. The coin if real is worth very little. Go to Ebay and look at what the coin should look like. Sorry it's not better news.
One other thing to keep in mind. Maybe the same hub but many dies would have been used for this issue. There would be minor differences from die...
Ground finds will sometimes take on this color.
I don't understand why the OP was deleted.
I'm at about 90% sure it's real as well. To me it's just funky images.
I'm not seeing any problem with it. Looks FH.
That is the S-8. Great find. :thumb:
An image of the obverse probably won't show that it's the variety. It's really tough to see. The reverse off center clash marks are the easy way...
I agree.
This one looks to be more than just a hit. The way it wraps the ear makes me wonder. I would guess it's some form of MD or a damaged die. Can't...
I have a great deal of respect for Littleton. It's rare to see an overgraded coin. Many that post about them say they pay a fair to high price...
This is what the reverse should look like. The OP coin is not this variety. [IMG]
Starting to wonder if the OP is someone from the past just here to mess with folks.
I like it.
This would be an off-center clash but I'm not seeing it. No way to see the DDO from those images.
Did PCGS call it a proof?
