I noticed it and also wonder what it is. Your explanation seems plausible. Regardless of what it is, I think it is distracting on a high grade coin.
66....I thought 67 was a possibility but it appears to have a few distractions that could knock it down to 66
55...I see wear; I could see it being a 58, but the hit under the eye and some other hits in the cheek area appear to prevent a 58 (at least to me)
