The doubling is towards the rim. Combo what Paddy said with a later die state. By the way, a Doubled die should be photo'd from directly above.

The doubling is on the MM and on the date. Both are doubled in the same direction, and the doubling is flat and shelf like. MD
History is just waiting to be found, I wouldn't know what to do if I found a coin like that.
